Sewage pump malfunction causes spill at MCBH

Marine Corps Base Hawaii says approximately 9,500 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the Mokapu Central Drainage Channel.

The spill occurred Wednesday, Oct. 1, between 6-9:30 a.m. and entered the channel near the intersection of Lawrence Road and Pancoast Place.

Officials say the spill was caused by a malfunctioning sewage lift station pump. It was contained aboard the base and did not reach the ocean.

The sewage lift station pump has been repaired, and affected grounds and surface streets have been cleaned and disinfected. Remediation efforts are ongoing.

The Hawaii Department of Health Clean Water Branch has been notified.
