Maui rescuers recover body from submerged vehicle

Firefighters from Wailuku and Kahului on Maui, along with an Ocean Safety rescue ski and the Air 1 rescue helicopter, recovered a body from a vehicle found submerged in the ocean below the scenic lookout off of Honoapiilani Highway Saturday morning.

Firefighters received the call at 8:44 a.m. for a vehicle that went off the cliff and was partially submerged in the water with a person still within. The vehicle was found approximately 40 feet down below the cliff, submerged under 10 feet of water and 30 feet off the shoreline.

The incident was reported by three skin divers who were spearfishing in the area.

Rescue crews removed the victim — later identified as Donald Craig Clary, 50, of Kihei — from the vehicle and used the helicopter to airlift the victim to a landing zone at the Scenic Lookout parking lot.

This incident is being classified as an unattended death pending further investigation and the results of the autopsy.
