The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises motorists that morning coning of the west-bound Lunalilo Street on-ramp to the H-1 Freeway will be permanently discontinued effective immediately.
After a one-month trial period, the HDOT determined that due to the additional fourth lane created by recent re-striping projects, the morning coning and re-routing of traffic to the Punchbowl Street on-ramp is no longer needed.
“With the initial two-week trial and then another two-week period to watch traffic flow, our engineers found that traffic was moving through this area and that the coning should be permanently removed,” said Interim Director Ford Fuchigami.
The morning coning was originally put in place in 2004 to improve the flow of west-bound traffic during the rush hour commute.
The coning was placed each weekday beginning at 5:45 a.m. and removed by 8:30 a.m.
Discontinuing this program will save approximately $150,000 per year.
