Nationally recognized Hawaii fashion designer gives back to his school

A fashion graduate from Honolulu Community College is taking the fashion-media world by storm.

Kini Zamora returned to HCC Thursday night for the first time since he graduated back in 2005.

He took time to talk to students, teachers and fans about how the skills he learned in Hawaii helped him design award-winning gowns on this season of the hit cable show “Project Runway.”

“The teachers here are awesome,” Zamora said, “and that is the kind of work they train us to do — I mean if it’s an eighth or an inch off, they mark you down. The training I got here helped me in the future and definitely on the show. This is were I learned my skills.”

Zamora also showed off some of the creations that just made him the toast of the recent New York Fashion Week.

The results of the competition between himself and three other designers from around the country will be shown on next week’s “Project Runway” season finale.

Kini Zamora addresses a gathering at Honolulu Community College Thursday, Oct. 16, about his designs and experiences on this season's "Project Runway" show.
