Authorities are investigating possible wildlife damage after a vehicle got stuck in waters off Windward Oahu overnight.
Police say at around 10 p.m. Monday, a man drove his Toyota 4Runner into the water during low tide in Kahaluu to check his crab traps and got stuck.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the vehicle released oil and gasoline into the water before it was towed away Tuesday morning.
“The quantities that we’ve seen here that were released are of a reportable nature, but the impact is lessened because it’s such a light oil that it burns off very quickly since it was mostly gasoline,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Zachary Smith, U.S. Coast Guard.
Smith says the Coast Guard will evaluate any environmental impact and could hold the driver responsible.
