Fire burns garbage and brush at homeless camps behind refuse station

Black smoke was visible was from the H-1 Freeway near Middle Street late Thursday afternoon due to a garbage and brush fire behind the Keehi Transfer Station.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the fire was reported at 4:54 p.m.

Firefighters say that homeless camps located behind the refuse station were involved in the fire.

A combination of both garbage and brush were set ablaze.

According to HFD, the fire was controlled at 5:28 p.m. and extinguished completely at 5:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but an investigation is underway.
