The search for a missing nine-year-old from Pennsylvania is over.
The FBI says Billy Hanson was located safe in the island country of Niue in the South Pacific Ocean.
Authorities are now working to reunite him with his mother in Hazleton, Pa.
His non-custodial father and alleged kidnapper, Jeffrey Ford Hanson, 46, is in custody in Niue, officials said.
The FBI and the Seattle Police Department Major Crimes Task Force is working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on the extradition process. Once that is complete, federal agents will bring Jeffrey Hanson back to the U.S.
A federal arrest warrant was issued for Jeffrey Ford Hanson on Sept. 12 in the United States District Court, Western District of Washington in Seattle, after he was charged with international parental kidnapping.
At that time, the two were last seen in Seattle on or about Sept. 4.
Authorities said Hanson was a known drug abuser with a volatile personality.
A search bulletin was issued across the Pacific as authorities believed Hanson could sail great distances on his white 1976 Cooper sailboat.
The joint investigation combined the resources of the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Seattle Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force, the Port of Seattle Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
