Man charged in Pearl City car theft pleads not guilty

Erick Butner

The man accused of stealing a car in Pearl City with a three-year-old boy inside it pleaded not guilty Monday to an auto theft charge.

Erick Butner is being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to make $30,000 bail.

The 24-year-old is accused of stealing the car on Monday, Oct. 27.

Victim Christian Ibarra told KHON2 he left his black Lexus running as he went back into his home. A minute later, he saw a man drive off with his car, his son still in the backseat.

Butner allegedly stopped a few blocks away and was detained by bystanders until police arrived.

Prosecutors decided to drop a kidnapping charge against him because they believed he didn’t know the child was in the car.

An initial trial week has been set for Jan. 5.
