Ask HPD: Is it okay to cross the street while “Don’t walk” hand flashing?

Detective Sharie Souza of the Honolulu Police Department Criminal Investigation Division will answer this week’s question from a viewer.

Question: Is it ok to still cross the street if the “Don’t walk” hand starts to flash?

Answer: We want to remind pedestrians to cross the street only when the white “Walk” or walking person light is on. If you’re in the crosswalk and the hand starts to blink or the “do not cross” sign comes up, just safely and briskly cross the intersection.

If you see the red blinking hand or the “Do not” cross sign before crossing the street, please obey the signal and wait. Violators face a 130-dollar fine.
