The State Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that in December, Kalanianaole Highway will be completely shut down between Lunalilo Home Road and Kealahou Street in East Oahu.
Crews will be replacing the rusty guardrail between Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach.
The work and closures will happen starting the night of Sunday, December 7 to the morning of Friday, December 12, from 9 pm to 4 am.
It will mainly affect people going between Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo. There will be a detour through Hawaii Kai, which they can take.
The project started last year to replace the rusty guardrails after KHON2 alerted the DOT about how bad it was.
Since then, a state contractor has been fixing the guardrails in sections. Next month’s work will be a continuation of that job.
The new guardrails will have an epoxy coating on them to help protect them from the salt in the air, since they’re right next to the ocean.
The job will cost the state $170,000.
