A 69-year-old Utah man apparently drowned in waters off Anini Beach Sunday afternoon.
Police have identified him as Junies Jenkins of St. George, Utah.
According to county officials, the man was walking in shallow water near the channel at around 3 p.m. when he was swept out by a rip current.
Water safety officers on Jet Skis arrived to find several Good Samaritans attempting to rescue the unresponsive male using paddle boards and a dive buoy.
Firefighters initiated CPR on shore before medics arrived and transported the man to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Representatives from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, are assisting the man’s family.
