A man accused of killing a man on Salt Lake Boulevard appeared in court for the first time Thursday.
A judge confirmed bail for Dale Rodriguez Jr., 41, at $1 million and ordered him to appear in court again next Monday.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Dec. 9, between Likini Place and Wanaka Street.
According to court documents, a witness spotted Rodriguez arguing with the victim in the middle of the street.
The victim was later identified by the Honolulu medical examiner as Jesse Waikiki, 33.
The witness told authorities she saw a third man run toward them and punch Waikiki in the face.
After Waikiki fell to the ground, the witness said Rodriguez beat him with an object, then dropped the object near the fence line. Officers eventually recovered “what appeared to be a handle for pulling carts,” according to documents.
After receiving a call at 5:06 a.m., responding officers found Waikiki and a 38-year-old woman, both unconscious.
Waikiki was pronounced dead at Tripler Army Medical Center. The medical examiner said he died of blunt force injury to his face.
Police have yet to arrest a second suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
