Arrest made in Hawaii Island officer-involved shooting

A 33-year-old Mountain View woman has been released from police custody after being arrested for suspicion of attempted murder and theft of a vehicle, in connection with an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday in the Puna District.

Ashley Brooks De Morales was released at 11 a.m. Friday, pending further investigation.

On Tuesday, Puna Patrol officers were on Route 11 attending to an unrelated incident. The officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle traveling south on Route 11.

Police say the vehicle sped toward the officers in a threatening manner. In response, an officer fired one shot toward the vehicle which drove off toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The officers were not injured.

De Morales was arrested for suspicion of two counts of attempted first degree murder, second degree theft, and contempt of court.

The stolen black Nissan pickup truck was also recovered.

Police continue to ask anyone who may have witnessed either the theft of the pickup truck from the Prince Kuhio Plaza or the shooting incident on Route 11 near the Kulani Road intersection to call Detective Grant Todd at 961-2385 or email at gtodd@co.hawaii.hi.us.
