Ask HPD: Restrictions on hiring special duty officers

Detective Sharie Souza of the Honolulu Police Department Criminal Investigation Division will answer this week’s questions from a viewer.

Question: Are there restrictions when hiring special duty officers?

Answer: HPD officers hired for special duty assignments are off-duty.

A special duty assignment can be requested if an off-duty officer is needed to maintain order, provide security, or facilitate traffic flow at an event or function.

Special-duty officers cannot be hired to provide bodyguard services or be used at union gatherings.  The HPD retains the right to decline a special-duty request.

If you would like to hire a special duty officer, contact (808)723-3575 at least ten days before the event.
