Maui moped rider dies from injuries sustained in collision

Maui police report that a moped rider died from injuries from a collision on Olinda Road, north of Kehau Place, in Makawao.

At about 1:09 a.m. Sunday, Nov 30, the collision occurred that involved the operator of a Toyota pickup truck, traveling South on Olinda Road, who struck a moped operator traveling in the same direction.

The operator of the moped, Alika Kapuaala, 36, from Makawao, sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Kapuaala was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The operator of the Toyota did not sustain any injuries.

On the morning of Thursday, December 18, Kapuaala succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead while at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

This is the 21st traffic fatality on Maui, compared to 15 at the same time last year.

The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
