More than a dozen businesses and non-profits are “sharing the merry” with homeless families in Kakaako Saturday afternoon.
The pop-up potluck event was called “Share the Merry” hosted by community outreach organization Urban Aloha.
A hygiene tent gave out basic necessities from diapers to shampoos and razors. Also given away, clothing and used toys as Santa brought festive wrapped gifts for children.
And of course, there was a feast for all.
“The turnout is crazy, this is more than we’ve ever had for an event, we usually do these events every month and this is the largest one by far and this is fantastic,” said Raina Whiting of “In the Streets.”
Whiting also says the turnout of support for this event is evidence that people are starting to understand and participate in helping out and giving back to the community that’s in need.
She says more than 300 homeless people live in the Kakaako park area, and most are families with children.
