Canoe paddlers rescued in waters off Fort DeRussy

Three canoes overturned in waters just outside Fort DeRussy in Waikiki Saturday.

The emergency call came in at 7:22 a.m.

Two of the canoes were able to get upright and paddle in to shore.

The third canoe, with six teenagers and a coach in his 50s, was unable to get upright. A rescue helicopter extracted five of the teens, with one managing to swim to shore. A bystander boat picked up the coach.

Emergency medical personnel evaluated two adults and six teens, and all refused EMS transport.

No injuries were reported.
