Residents in and around Waikiki may have been awoken Saturday morning by an explosion on Saratoga Road.
The reason for the explosion was part of a scheduled location shoot for “Hawaii Five-0.”
Honolulu film commissioner Walea Constantinau, who was at the shoot, said the street was secured and traffic rerouted between 5-10 a.m. Saturday.
The scene, located between the post office and Kalakaua Avenue, involved blowing up the specially rigged car, complete with rising smoke and controlled flames.
“HPD was on the scene, doing specific road control,” Constantinau said, “and the area was properly managed. We had communication with the fire department and we had more than an adequate number of safety devices, like fire extinguishers, on hand.”
The car explosion, which took one take, occurred around 8:15 a.m.
Constantinau said that the special effect was coordinated by Hawaii-born, Emmy Award winner Archie Ahuna.
