Kyle Suppa

The Sony Open in Hawaii turns 50 this year.

Its first round kicked off Thursday afternoon and, despite the vog, golfers enjoyed calm conditions at Waialae Country Club.

Paul Casey and Webb Simpson are currently tied for first place on the leaderboard at 8 under par. Click here for the full results.

But a 16-year-old from Punahou School proved he could hold his own.

Junior Kyle Suppa finished at 1 under par in a 21-way tie for 49th place, and is in strong contention to make the cut this weekend.

The tournament wraps up Sunday.
