Officials say a restaurant fire Thursday appears to be a case of arson.
The alarm came in just before noon from On Dong restaurant on S. King Street in McCully.
Firefighters acted quickly to put out the fire by 12:17 p.m. Crews then searched the entire two-story building and duct systems to ensure the fire didn’t spread.
“Especially as a restaurant, they do have duct systems, so we have to have our crews go look for any kind of fire extension that could travel through any crevices or attics or spaces that we can’t see,” said Kendall Ching, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.
The restaurant is considered a total loss and two neighboring businesses suffered apparent smoke damage, officials said.
Two lanes of S. King Street were closed while crews responded.
The cause and damage estimate remain under investigation.
