The U.S. Army is planning to destroy an ordnance found on a Kihei beach.
According to the Maui Police Department, a visitor from Washington state brought the unspent artillery round into the Kihei substation Thursday morning.
He reported finding the ordnance in the sand at Ulua Beach.
The U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was notified. Sgt. Carl Yob indicated the mortar appeared to be an anti-aircraft mortar from the World War II era.
Police are keeping the ordnance until Army experts can destroy it.
