LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team squandered a sizable early lead in a 65-50 Big West Conference loss to Long Beach State on Saturday night at the Walter J. Pyramid.
The ‘Bows fall to 15-8 overall and 3-4 in the Big West. Long Beach State improves to 12-11 and 6-1 in league play.
Roderick Bobbitt had eight steals to put him 11 away from breaking the UH single season record set by Tom Henderson in 1972-73 campaign.
Travis Hammonds led the 49ers with 12 points and David Samuels added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Hawai’i got off to a fantastic start, reeling off the first 12 points of the game and holding the Beach to without a bucket until 13:36 remaining in the first half. Long Beach State would rally, using an 11-0 run late in the half highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Hammonds. The ‘Bows would stem the tide though and carry a 27-26 lead into the break.
The ‘Bows will remain on the mainland this week in preparation for the back end of their longest road trip of the season. Next up is Cal Poly on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
