What’s old is new again. A new bakery just opened in Kalihi, but it has longstanding roots in this state. Joel Hori of Hawaiian Pie Company explains that his grandfather started Holy’s Bakery on Hawaii Island in the 1930s, then he and his parents opened a Manoa location in 1979. Now, he and his children have opened Hawaiian Pie Company (not affiliated with Holy’s Bakery.)
The designer, handcrafted pies are about three pounds each! They’ll offer traditional favorites but distinguish themselves from his grandfather’s original offerings by creating new, tropical flavors. The Strawberry Guava pie Hori showed us on air is the special flavor for the month of February as the bakery prepares for Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year’s.
