LAS VEGAS–The University of Hawaii softball team (3-2, 0-0 Big West) will test its luck on an annual road trip to Las Vegas for UNLV’s Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic which runs from Feb. 12-15.
Hawaii will take on BYU, Utah State, Utah Valley, No. 12 UCLA, Seattle and Portland State during the four-day tournament.
Hawaii went 3-2 during this past week’s Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. UH defeated St. Mary’s twice and knocked off No. 25 DePaul, but fell twice to No. 4 Oklahoma. Leading UH at the plate is senior first baseman, Leisha Li’ili’i, who hit .333 overall going 4-for-12 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Fellow senior Kayla Wartner hit an even .300 (3-for-10) with a double and two runs scored.
In the pitching circle, sophomore transfer Kanani ‘Aina Cabrales went 2-0 with a pair of complete game shut-outs over the Gaels and the Blue Demons. Overall in three appearances, she gave up five runs on 12 hits with five walks and seven strike outs in 14.2 innings pitched. Cabrales has a 2.39 ERA going into the second week of the season.
Redshirt freshman Brittany Hitchcock also threw 14.2 innings in three appearances. Hitchcock is 1-2 with a 4.30 ERA with six walks and six strike outs overall. She earned her first collegiate win with a 3-1 decision on opening night over St. Mary’s.

BYU: BYU holds a 9-2 record against UH and have won the last four meetings, including last season’s 3-1 win on Mar. 13, 2014.
Utah State: UH holds a 34-14 record against former WAC rivals, the Aggies. Hawai’i swept Utah State in their last series meeting as WAC members in 2012.
Utah Valley: Hawai’i and Utah Valley have met just twice, with UH winning both. The last meeting was a 3-1 UH win in Las Vegas on Feb. 17, 2013.
UCLA: UCLA leads UH 18-4 in the series history. UCLA has won the last five, including two games last season in the team’s opening tournament Paradise Classic.
Seattle: Hawai’i leads Seattle, 4-0. Last year, UH edged out the RedHawks, 9-8 at the UNLV tournament on Feb. 14, 2014.
Portland State: UH leads Portland State 16-6 with the ‘Bows winning the last eight games. The last meeting came last year, when UH came back to down the Vikings, 13-12, Feb. 15, 2014.
