Some Aiea residents reached out to KHON2 with questions about the lack of lights at a public park.
KHON2 took their concerns to the city.
Officials say Aiea District Park used to have lights around its softball field.
They were removed a little over a year ago because the poles were rusting at its base, and posed as a safety hazard.
“Just the foundations of the poles. They were looking at signs of rust and fatigue. The connections that we were worried that it could have fallen over,” said City Department of Design and Construction Deputy Director Mark Yonamine.
“There would definitely be a concern because it would be more likely that there would be some trouble if things weren’t being monitored and lights kind of help keep the secure environment,” said area resident Renee Mann.
The city says the park will undergo some renovations. For now, there are no plans to install new lights.
