Ryan Dyson spotted an unusual-looking crab in the Ala Wai Canal Monday.
So we passed along his photo to the Waikiki Aquarium for an expert opinion.
Director Andrew Rossiter says it appears to be a collector crab.
“Even when present, they are very difficult to see, because they cover themselves with sponges and limu that they collect and place on their shell as camouflage, hence the name collector crab,” he explained.
Rossiter says staff would need to see the crab in person to positively identify it.
