(CNN) — A new laser weapon system is one step closer to reality.
Lockheed Martin has been conducting tests on the system and says they’re going well.
Their prototype can do some serious damage to a pickup truck. It was able to burn through its engine from more than a mile away.
The name for the new cost-effective system is ATHENA, an acronym for Advanced Test High Energy Asset. ATHENA creates a 30-kilowatt laser beam, 30 million times more powerful than a laser pointer.
