University of Hawaii softball player Brittany Hitchcock was named Big West Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her young career on Monday, March 9. Hitchcock recorded a 3-0 record this past week in the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament.
Hitchcock, a redshirt freshman from Huntington Beach, Calif., posted a 0.69 ERA in 20.1 innings over four appearances with 13 strike outs to just four walks. She earned her first win of the week in a relief appearance against Longwood on Thursday. She fired 4.1 innings allowing three hits and two runs (both unearned) with zero walks and four strike outs. In the game, UH came back from seven runs down in the fifth inning to defeat the Lancers, 8-7 in eight innings.
Against Oregon State, Hitchcock fired her third complete game to earn the win over the Beavers. She gave up one run while scattering seven hits with two walks and a career-high six strike outs. Hitchcock and the UH defense retired nine consecutive batters that bridged the third through six innings. UH’s 4-1 win over the Beavers was Hawai’i’s first win over a Pac-12 team this season.
She followed that performance with another complete game win over another Pac-12 team, Utah. She allowed one unearned run while spacing six hits with a walk. She faced just 26 batters and retired 14-straight batters after giving up the run in the second inning as UH downed the Utes, 5-0.
Overall, Hitchcock is 7-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 69.2 innings pitched. She has 23 walks and 30 strike outs on the season.
Hitchcock’s weekly award is the first for a UH pitcher since Kaia Parnaby earned the accolade five times in 2013.
Hawai’i will play one game against East Carolina on Tuesday, March 10 at 6:00 pm. UH will then start their final non-conference tournament, the Hawai’i Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic, from March 11-15. Coming to Honolulu are Columbia, St. Bonaventure, Virginia Tech, and Western Illinois.
