Saturday, March 14, is International Pi Day, because those numbers are the same as the mathematical formula for pi. This year is significant: Pi Day falls on 3/14/15, the first numbers of pi.
The Hawaii State Library partnered with Kahuku Intermediate & High School to celebrate with a Pie-Baking Contest on March 10 and a Pie-Eating Contest on March 12, at the Kahuku Public & School Library at 56-490 Kamehameha Hwy. It starts at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. All ages – and families- can submit a pie together. Judges will award prizes and trophies for the Tastiest Pie, Most Creative Pie, and Most Healthy Pie.
Math teachers will choose 12 students (6 each from Intermediate & High School) to be contestants on Thursday, March 12 in the school Cafeteria for the Pie-Eating Contest. One of the celebrity judges for the contest is Ted Nakamura, owner of Ted’s Bakery – a famous alumnus of Kahuku Intermediate & High School!
Additionally, the school is holding a “Got Pi Challenge: Math Madness” contest from March 2 to 11 for students who memorize and recite at least 20 numbers of the mathematical concept of pi to their math teachers or library staff member.
Call the school for more information at 293-8935.
