The No. 1 University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team took over the top ranking in both the latest AVCA and DiG Magazine collegiate sand volleyball polls after turning back a pair of top 5 teams this past weekend.
The ‘Bows (2-0) breezed by No. 5 Loyola Marymount in their season opener this past Friday at Queen’s Beach on O’ahu. They then sent shockwaves through the sand volleyball landscape by upending top-ranked and defending national champion Pepperdine, a feat that UH had not accomplished in five previous meetings.
The Rainbow Wahine compete in their first road competition this weekend, travelling to Chula Vista, Calif. and the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge for dual and pairs competitions.
UH will face Grand Canyon University (10:00 a.m. PT) and TCU (12:00 p.m. PT) in dual matches on Saturday morning. The 32-team pairs competition will begin Saturday afternoon and conclude with the finals slated for 2:00 p.m. PT on Sunday.
Also competing in the event will be No. 2 Pepperdine and Cal State Bakersfield.
In the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, UH’s first pairs competition of the season, Katie Spieler and Olivia Urban battled their way to a runner-up finish.
