Dumping of dead sea turtle in trash can under investigation

Ocean wildlife officials are investigating a dead sea turtle that was recently found in a trash can at Maili Beach.

The Endangered Species branch of NOAA brought the turtle back to its facility where they will do a necropsy to determine how it died.

Officials remind everyone to call them if you come across an animal like this, rather than just dumping it in the trash.

“It’s important in that it gives us an opportunity to gather some information,” said NOAA’s Pat Opay. “One of the things we’re always trying to determine with all our protected wildlife is the kinds of threats they face, what is the incident of each of those threats, and obviously, how many animals are being affected by those threats.”

To report such incidents, call the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement at 1-800-853-1964. Visit the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center website for more information.
