Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services report an accident involving a car and a bicycle a little after 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
The bicyclist, a male in his 20s-30s, was hit by a car near Ala Moana Blvd. and Kamakee Street.
A 2013 red Honda, driven by a 47-year-old man, was traveling east on Ala Moana with the green light in its favor. The bicycle, traveling mauka, abruptly entered the roadway against the signal crossing (it was near a crosswalk, but not in one).
The bicyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet and sustained head injuries from the accident. The motorist was not injured.
The bicyclist was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.
The motorist was an off-duty police officer with 16 years of service and assigned to the downtown/Chinatown area.
Although a negligent injury case has been opened, his police powers remain in place and he has not been arrested.
