USDA Deputy Secretary focuses on Hawaii’s agriculture industry

U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden is visiting Hawaii this week with US Senator Mazie Hirono (D) and stopped by Wake Up 2day to talk about what they’ll be doing in the Islands. Deputy Secretary Harden will take a closer look at a number of issues, such as where Hawaii stands in its effort to be more food self-sufficient and how federal USDA resources are being utilized in the islands. For example, the Deputy Secretary and Senator Hirono will visit Kona to gain a deeper understanding of the coffee berry borer issue and how it affects Hawaii’s multi-million dollar coffee industry. They will also visit Puna, to visits agricultural businesses hard hit by Hurricane Iselle.
