Importance of energy conservation in the Navy

As we continue through Earth Month we have opportunities to talk about energy conservation, and in this case, why that is so important to the US Navy both on shore and while out at sea.  Kate Ramirez of Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Lt. Commander Robert Franklin, Operations Officer of Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, told Wake Up 2day about some successful efforts.

Hickam’s Freedom Tower converted to new LED lightbulbs, used when the tower is lit up for the holidays. This is one of the largest Christmas tree lightings in Hawaii, with the tower visible from as far as Ewa Beach. Ramirez says this change to LED bulbs saved a lot of money.

Commander Franklin explains that this change to LED lighting isn’t limited to shore installations, and that it’s important for the Navy to make this transition to LED lighting because it saves money and makes sense for the Navy on shore and out at sea.
