Navy hosts community meeting updates on Red Hill fuel tank

Officials held a meeting on Thursday to give residents an update on the Navy fuel storage tanks, which were found to be leaking last year.

They say as much as 27,000 gallons of jet fuel was released from the underground storage tanks.

Now their goal is to stop this from happening again.

“The January 2014 release, we have taken mitigation strategies to work with EPA and DOH on extra water well monitoring, extra ground water monitoring, extra sole vapor monitoring to make sure no fuel is getting into the drinking water and the drinking water remains safe,” said U.S. Navy Regional Engineer Captain Dean Tufts.

The Navy says the water is safe to drink.
