Auction of Clint Eastwood car benefits Hawaii Public Radio

A donation by Clint Eastwood in the form of a classic car is expected to benefit Hawaii Public Radio.

During its current semi-annual pledge drive, HPR received an unexpected gift from the veteran director-actor in the form of a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, which Eastwood purchased in California in the 1970s and later shipped to Maui for his frequent stays on the island.

President and General Manager Michael Titterton said that after the completion of the pledge drive “we plan to put this collector’s vehicle up for auction, most likely on eBay. The proceeds will then be directed to HPR’s endowment fund, where it will help support the station long into the future.”

Director of Marketing Phyllis Look said that some individuals have already expressed interest in the car, and if the goal amount is hopefully met by the end of the week, the station will begin work to put the Eastwood car up for auction with the help of a broker.

The classic car is a vintage Mercedes-Benz in dark blue. This 300SEL is distinctive for its combination of a luxury sedan body and a race car engine. The nearly two-ton vehicle is powered by a 6.3-liter engine, which allows it to reach a top speed of 140 miles per hour.

The car pictured is not the Eastwood car, but similar to it.
