Pacific Army Reserve renames headquarters after late Hawaii senator

Fort Shafter Flats

A dedication ceremony was held Tuesday in honor of late Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye.

The Pacific Army Reserve renamed its headquarters at Fort Shafter the Daniel K. Inouye U.S. Army Reserve Complex.

The headquarters encompasses Fort Shafter Flats, which is located on the makai side of Moanalua Freeway.

A new sign was unveiled at the ceremony and officials say freeway signage will also change.

Inouye’s widow, Irene Hirano-Inouye, was the guest of honor. Several flag officers from the greater Oahu military community were also present.

In addition to the dedication, ground was broken on a memorial park, wall of heroes and Japanese garden.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2018.
