The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has been cited for violations of hazardous waste and used oil regulations.

The violations stem from abandoned contaminants found at the former Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Coral Sea Road.

After receiving complaints, the Hawaii State Department of Health Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch conducted an onsite inspection on Oct. 14, 2014.

It subsequently issued a Notice of Violation and Order (NOVO) ordering DHHL to clean up and properly dispose of the substances.

As a major landowner and lessor, the department is also required to conduct a site characterization for contaminants associated with the automotive and race track operations, then submit a corrective action plan.

No monetary penalties have been imposed for the violations.

DHHL has requested a hearing to contest the NOVO.
