Anthony Corpuz, the man assaulted in a brutal attack in Kalihi on May 3, was pronounced dead Sunday evening.
Police are still on the search for a suspect following the assault that initially left Corpuz, 53, in critical condition.
Honolulu police say a man struck Corpuz outside Club Cleopatra on Dillingham Boulevard at 4:20 a.m. May 3.
His family said he was there to collect cans and bottles, which he did regularly to support the family. His sister, Virginia Corpuz, said he left their apartment at around 3 a.m. to pick up cans.
“He was pushing a wagon with all the recyclable bottles. He doesn’t go inside the bar. They leave bags for him to pick up, recycle bottles. They always do that. Every Sunday he goes there. That’s his routine,” she said.
Corpuz volunteered at Kalakaua Middle School after his regular shift working at Kokea Center.
After hearing what happened, the students raised almost $2,000 in two days for the Corpuz family.
A murder investigation is underway. An autopsy by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office is pending.
