Geobunga is here to show you how to take advantage of Hawaii’s beautiful environment and nature by growing your own Cook’s Garden. Taizo Braden took a trip out to Waimanalo to learn more.
A Cook’s Garden is a garden that utilizes herbs and vegetables that you can use in your everyday cooking. Growing our own food has several benefits. It’s less expensive that the grocery store, it’s right outside your door, you control the pesticide use so you know what’s going on your food, it’s sustainable, and it’s a great way to show your family where food comes from.
You want to grow things that you and your family will eat regularly. Things like lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil – whatever your family enjoys eating and will actually be used in your kitchen. You also want to make sure that you group your plants by their water and sunlight needs, so that each group of plantings requires the same amount of sun and water.
It’s not as challenging as it seems. Geobunga can teach you how to successfully plant and maintain a Cook’s Garden at one of their many workshops. They go over planting basics, watering, soil selection, sunlight, pruning and harvesting -and can definitely help turn that black thumb green.
