Teen critically injured in Kahului pedestrian crash

A Maui teen is fighting for his life after a pedestrian crash in Kahului.

It happened on Tuesday, May 26, at approximately 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of S. Papa Avenue and Kea Street.

According to Maui police, a car was traveling south on Papa Avenue when the 40-year-old driver hit the 16-year-old, who was crossing west within the marked crosswalk.

Police said the driver failed to see the teen.

The boy sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and airbags did not deploy.

Police are still investigating whether speed, drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash.
