The lifeless body of a male swimmer who went missing Monday morning in waters off OTEC Beach was located later that afternoon.
Fire Department personnel located the body approximately 25 yards offshore, under water. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead.
He has been identified as Richard Demby, 26, of Kailua-Kona. An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined that he drowned.
Hawaii Island police originally initiated a missing person case in connection Demby’s disappearance.
In response to an 11:49 a.m. call Monday reporting a possible swimmer in distress, Kona patrol officers met with a 26-year-old man who reported that he had been swimming with Demby, but couldn’t find him after he returned to shore.
