Middle school students on Oahu who are interested in learning more about the Fashion Industry have an opportunity to be mentored by professionals in Hawaii’s fashion industry. It’s through a program called ‘Reach the Runway.’
Trini gets more information on the program from Stacey Makiya, Senior Fashion Editor at HONOLULU Magazine and Allison Izu Song, Owner & Designer of Allison Izu.
Reach The Runway is a program that will create mentorship opportunities for O‘ahu middle school students interested in pursuing a career in the fashion industry. It is a community outreach program of HONOLULU Fashion week and a private/public partnership with the Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui’s R.E.A.C.H. Initiative. The goal of the program is to provide students with a broader understanding of careers in the local fashion industry while equipping them with tools to start building their own paths in this field.
Makiya says, “there’s a lot of talent in the fashion industry here in Hawaii. We’ve seen Hawaii-born designers and industry professionals on the national stage. And a lot of Hawaii-inspired fashion on the runways in top fashion destinations. We want to expose Hawaii’s middle school students to all the opportunities available to them here in state. This initiative supports HONOLULU Fashion Week’s ultimate mission to grow the state’s fashion community by encouraging and expanding the way the world views Hawai‘i fashion.?
To apply, students must be currently enrolled in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade as of April 1. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2015. Interested students will need to submit a 300-word essay describing what Hawai‘i fashion means to them and select one of seven areas of interest including journalism, photography, fashion design, magazine design, hair and makeup, styling, and modeling. More information, rules and the online application can be found at www.reachtherunway.com
Upon completion of the mentorships, at least one piece of work from each student will be put on display at the 2nd annual HONOLULU Fashion Week Nov. 20-22, 2015. One student from each area of interest will win an ultimate HONOLULU Fashion Week experience, while will include fashion show passes, hotel stays in Waikīkī, transportation to HONOLULU Fashion Week and more.
