Beretania Street road work halted for now

Some drivers in town want to know what’s going on with the long-stalled repaving of S. Beretania Street.

The city started work on the busy roadway last year, digging up the asphalt and pouring new concrete bus pads.

For the past several months, the project has been in limbo with nothing happening after the discovery of shallow utility pipes under the old asphalt.

“They had to go to the utility company and get them to lower the utilities before they can repave the road, so in the interim, the administration has decided to do a top paving and not the whole, full-on reconstruction of the road at this time,” said Carolee Kubo on behalf of Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

“It is extremely frustrating because they’re grinding it all the way down, taking everything out. There’s a huge hump in the middle from pavement after pavement, redoing all the bus pads, moving power lines as needed, fixing the curbs and gutters and (everything’s at a) standstill. You are driving down there now and, well don’t. I would like to see it done and done right,” said McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board chair Ron Lockwood.

Right now, there is no firm timeline for the project to restart.

Kubo says the mayor wants it done and it is a top priority.
