Kihei man dies after canoe flips off Sugar Beach

A Kihei paddler who was brought to shore off Maui has died.

Firefighters say Darin Kobatake, 50, was paddling a one-man canoe when it apparently flipped over.

Investigators say a stand-up paddle boarder heard Kobatake yelling, but by the time he was able to get to the victim, Kobatake was already unconscious.

The paddle boarder began CPR and called for help at around 6 p.m.

The Coast Guard located them about a mile off Sugar Beach and took them to Maalaea Harbor, but despite lifesaving efforts, Kobatake died at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled.
