Maui authorities say the circumstances surrounding two overnight brush fires in Pukalani appear suspicious.
The call came in at around 11:49 p.m. Monday. Crews from Makawao, Kula and Kahului responded near the split at Old Haleakala Highway and the Haleakala Highway bypass.
Firefighters arrived to find two separate fires, one on the north side of the bypass and one on the south.
A crew managed to contain the southern fire, which was most at risk of spreading with the wind. That fire burned about 1,500 square feet.
At 12:02 a.m. Tuesday, another crew arrived and contained the northern fire. It burned about 2,000 square feet.
Both fires were extinguished by 12:35 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials said there were no witnesses. The cause of the fires is undetermined.
