Hokulea crew members dive into the Great Barrier Reef, students join in through live stream

Hokule’a is in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and on Sunday afternoon, Hawai’i time, crew members, including University of Hawaii scientists and navigator Nainoa Thompson, could be seen diving live on Hokulea’s website.

Students in Hawai’i and in New Zealand were watching and participating, including a youth leadership group, who watched from the offices of ‘Oiwi TV in Makiki.

It was designed as an underwater learning experience, blending scientific and indigenous perspectives to help understand the beauty and delicacy of our world’s oceans and reef ecosystems.

The expedition was a joint exploration with divers from the Great Barrier Reef headquarters.
