The suspect in the 2013 death of a 51-year-old woman in Waikiki has pleaded guilty.
Joseph Kahawai, 48, pleaded guilty Monday morning to manslaughter in the death of Janine Meyer.
According to court documents, surveillance video caught the two together entering Island Hostel on Ala Moana Boulevard on Oct. 27, 2013, and showed Kahawai throwing Meyer’s body into a dumpster the next morning.
Meyer was smothered to death, according to the Honolulu medical examiner’s office.
Kahawai was initially charged with murder, but in a deal that was endorsed by Meyer’s family, he was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter, officials said.
Under the terms of the deal, Kahawai will serve a full 20 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole, work furlough or early release.
He will be sentenced on September 1.
