University of Hawai’i softball pitcher Brittany Hitchcock has been selected to play for the Puerto Rican national softball team this summer. She will be competing in the 10th World Cup of Softball which is being held this season in Irvine, Calif. at Bill Barber Park from June 29-July 5. The following week, the team will head north to Canada where they will play in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship from July 7-13.
Hitchcock finished her redshirt freshman year this past spring, appearing in 32 games with 29 starts in the pitching circle. She posted an 18-7 overall record with 15 complete games—including four shutouts—with a 2.37 ERA in 174.1 innings pitched. Hitchcock finished her rookie season strong, winning seven of her last eight starts in the Big West Conference. In conference, Hitchcock recorded a 9-2 record with a 2.12 ERA in 12 appearances and 76.0 innings pitched. She fired eight complete games with two shut outs while holding opponents to a .269 batting average. She earned a spot on the NFCA All-West Region third team and the all-Big West second team.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to play with the best players from around the world,” says Hitchcock. “This will be an experience that I will always remember and I’m thrilled to see where this opportunity will lead me.”

Hitchcock will join the team when they arrive later this week in California. They will have two days of practice before beginning play in the World Cup.
Team Puerto Rico is one of eight teams to compete in this year’s World Cup. They open the seven-day tournament with a doubleheader on June 29 against Argentina and Venezuela in back-to-back games beginning at 9:00 a.m. On June 30, Puerto Rico will face Team USA in the feature game at 7:00 p.m. They will play Canada on July 1, the USA Junior Team on July 2, Mexico on July 3, and Japan on the Fourth of July to finish pool play. On July 5th, the tournament will end with bracket play games.
The Canada Open will be played at the at the Softball City game parks in Surrey, British Columbia. Puerto Rico will take on seven other teams during the tourney. They will open the first day with a doubleheader against Japan and Mexico and play five other pool play games before bracket play begins on July 11. (See schedule below.)
