Kauai firefighters kept busy with small brush fires

The Kaua‘i Fire Department has responded to a total of five small brush fires so far this holiday weekend. All of the fires occurred during overnight hours and most were less than an acre in size.

Two fires broke out in Anahola late Thursday night – one near Pilipoli Road and one near Kealia Road. Firefighters then responded to a brush fire off the Kapa‘a Bypass Road, just south of the roundabout.

There were two more fires that occurred after 1 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters extinguished a fire located on the makai-side of Kapule Highway, between the Lihu‘e Airport and Hanama‘ulu Beach. A second fire then broke out near Paliku, also known as Donkey Beach, in Kealia. The location of this fire was difficult for crews to access but the fire was extinguished before reaching nearby homes. It was slightly over an acre in size.

None of the fires resulted in injury or damage to structures.

The causes of the fires are not yet known, but fire officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution while setting off fireworks this evening.

“We have had very warm and dry conditions this week, so it’s important to be prepared,” warned Fire Prevention Captain Daryl Date. “Wet down the areas where you plan to ignite fireworks and keep a water source nearby. Use fireworks only as directed, and be sure that children are under adult supervision at all times.”

Fire officials also take this opportunity to remind the public that fireworks are only allowed between 1 and 9 p.m. Saturday on private property. It is unlawful to ignite fireworks on public property, including sidewalks, roadways, beaches, and other public facilities.
